Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP PhotoSmart C4480 All-in-One Printer (Q8388A)Customer Review: A great printer for the price I paid! Summary: 4 Stars
To make a long review short, I can definitely recommend that you buy the printer for your home. It is a great quality machine for the price I paid. I have not had any computer slow downs experienced by other users. Yes, I had serious technical problems with the printer (no fault of my own), but HP fixed it over the phone by walking me through the steps to reset the printer. For the full story, read on...
First and foremost, you have to purchase a separate USB 2 cord if you do not already own one. (For the people who are unsure of the difference between a USB and a USB 2 - A USB cord is the one where both ends are the same. A USB 2 cord has a regular USB plug that goes to your computer and a smaller plug that goes to the HP.)
This is my first HP printer and my second all in one. After the piece of junk Lexmark all in one I owned (the scanner NEVER worked on it), I swore I would never purchase another 3 in 1 machine. I changed my mind after using various models of HP all in one machines that my friends own. At a price point of $100, I feel that I got my money's worth. I would have loved a higher end HP, but I was not willing to spend the money and now I am happy I did not because this machine meets my needs beautifully. Looking back, I should have paid a little more to get the wireless model because I have a laptop. However, the machine is very lightweight and I can move it to the dining room or the living room, depending on where I am working.
Scanning: I bought this primarily for the scanner as I am converting all of my statements, tax-related receipts, recipes, etc. to digital format. I why not get this model because I have not had a printer since my last printer died over a year ago. The scanner resolution is excellent for a $100 product. I was so impressed that I started scanning old photos so that I would have digital back-ups in case something happened to the originals. The scanned photos look great!! As to the problem of resizing something once you scan it - mine came with the HP Solution Center when I loaded the drivers on my computer. I thought that the HP Solution Center was for problems only, so it took me a while to check it out. I can crop, rotate, adjust, etc. documents and photos with the software.
Photo printing: Factoring in the cost of ink (regular or photo ink) and the cost of photo paper, the diminished photo quality from printing on an inkjet verses photo lab equipment, it is still more cost effective for me to print my photos at a lab. However, for the occasional photo, the sample paper which came with the printer (which I bought more of) and the regular printer ink produces a great photo! Although they are not as good as ones printed from a photo lab, the HP definitely exceeds my expectations for home printer.
An added bonus that I was not expecting is that I can put my XD-picture card in the printer to transfer my photos to my computer so that I do not burn down my camera batteries.
Regular printing: It's a good ink jet; one cannot expect laser-quality printing on an ink jet printer - period. I do not use it to print a lot of things, but I am very pleased with the printing performance and the ink quality.
Copying: Does it copy as well as a regular copy machine? Heck no, but again, it exceeds my expectations for a home printer and meets all of my home needs.
PROBLEMS: Everything was great for three weeks and then it went nuts. It would not scan more than half a page and the print quality was illegible. I knew that ink was not an issue. I went through the troubleshooting feature and found it to be absolutely useless. I went ahead and uninstalled then reinstalled the drivers. When I did, the printer kept feeding paper and would not stop. I had to unplug the device to make it stop. I returned it to the place of purchase (which was not Amazon) and was told that I could not return it because it was over the return limit.
I called HP and much to my dismay, HP outsources their customer support to India. Personally, I resent companies that outsource customer support jobs to overseas facilities. I feel that if a company sells a product in a country, they should provide customer support jobs in that country. Yes, I'm biased because I have had horrible language and cultural barrier issues when dealing with outsourced customer service/support. I would simply rather pay a little more money for a product for customer support to be in the US.
When calling HP, I had to speak VERY slowly to the customer support person and I had to wait while she went through her entire script because she did not have the language experience to deviate from the script and immediately address my issue. After what I consider to be too long of a time period, she eventually transferred me to a technician. The technician did not have the language experience to fully deviate from his script and go straight to what I was talking about, but we was absolutely wonderful. His accent was very thick and I kept apologizing because I felt bad that I could not understand him well, but he was very patient as he walked me through the steps to diagnose my problem. He was genuinely a nice person and wanted to help me. He took me through a series of steps that reset my machine and made everything normal again. I have not had a single problem since then. The best part was that the technician said he would call me back the next day and again the next week to make sure I was happy and he actually called at the time he said he would!!
Yes, a product should work out and not give any problems which is why I have it four stars instead of five. If you have a problem with the machine, I would strongly recommend that you call HP to see if there is a simple solution before you go through the trouble of returning it or worse yet, pitching it to a landfill.
