Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP KQ245AA Premium Autofocus WebcamCustomer Review: Mediocre webcam despite the hype Summary: 3 Stars
This Webcam isn't all that bad, but I'm pretty sure there are many misconceptions about the quality of the camera.
First let me list the pros of the camera. If you can get it for less than $50, then the money won't be wasted. It's not a bad camera at all, you get the video feed you need for basic tasks such as video chat. You can do all of the things you would want out of it. The autofocus feature is also an added bonus, if it's something you feel is necessary. I have never felt it was that important of a perk, but other people like it. It's just one of those "cool" things. Also, the internal microphone makes it less of a hassle to deal with hooking up a separate one.
Now for the cons. First of all, be prepared for a whole new definition of "quality". I've previously owned an old Logitech Creative Live! webcam that I bought from a retail store for about $35 a few years ago. It's not compatible with the current operating system I have now, so I bought the currently discussed webcam. I can say that I was quite pleased with the quality of the video feed considering the price of the camera. Now, this HP Premium webcam run's smoother than the last camera with a better frame rate, but the downside is the "noise" of the video feed. I'm talking about a "static" look to the video feed. You'll see mini pixels of colors flash around the video feed throughout the operation of the webcam, making it feel like a fuzzy picture. It's not too much of a problem and you can still tell that the image has good resolution, but believe me I wasn't prepared for it and I was REALLY disappointed with it. I thought the camera would have been better considering the name.
Another major problem I had with this camera were the drivers. I hate installing things I don't necessarily need. The installation CD pretty much forces you to install all the drivers listed, and there are a LOT. Besides the main one to run the camera, you'll get drivers to allow you to play around with special effects and such. Problem is, these drivers can have major issues depending on your operating system. I can't even access the special effects programs due to driver error, and searching on the HP help site didn't do anything, so I ended up not even bothering to use it.
Finally, don't be fooled by all the nice things the camera has such as the 2 Megapixel sensor. Unless your computer can handle it, it's useless. Using the setting, you're just going to get a better than normal picture quality, with an absurdly slow frame rate (it'll look like you're taking 1~2 second photos of yourself, it's THAT slow).
So to sum up, "Premium" is really a huge misconception. The only nice thing about this camera is how video feed runs smoothly, and the design of the camera. I really was disappointed with how the picture quality was affected by the static "noise" but it was still OK considering the price. If you want a really nice camera, this isn't the one to get. Spend some extra bucks to get the one you want, and don't feel that you need to sacrifice for the 2 Megapixel experience. It still will get the job done for basic funtions.
